If you ask me... I've never been a fan of traditional decor. Especifically, framed artwork hanging on the wall. For some reason I find framed paintings and photography... enclosed, and flat (but hey. that's just me). So when I started decorating my apartment I vowed to look for alternative ways to decorate the walls.
When I did the suite on the 2nd floor of my apartment and furnished it, it was pretty much ready. The only thing left was a white wall on one side of the bed. It didn't necessarily feel like there had to be something there... but it would've been nice. The issue was that, of course, I didn't want to just hang something, and something with volume was a challenge, since there isn't a lot of space between the wall and the bed.
One day I was looking at the wall thinking "I wish I could put a nice shelf with interesting things on it, but... there's no space" and that's when it hit me. I could instead design a nice shelf, print it on vinyl and put it on the wall... and the things on it could come alive through technology!
That's how the "Cooltural Shelf" idea was born. There would be this vinyl shelf, with mason jars "containing" interesting things to do in Lima or projects I'm involved with so my guests could get to know me a bit better, and the content would be accesible through QR codes printed on each jar. It actually took a couple months to execute between designing the shelf, the mason jars, deciding on the right content for each jar, measuring, putting together the whole design and then printing and installing it!
Since I didn't want it to be a one-off event, I wanted a way to be able to update or upgrade the shelf even after installed. So all of the jars were printed separately and are attached to the wall magnetically. This way I can move them around, and replace them! I also used dynamic QR codes on each jar so I can update the destination content remotely and always keep it up to date.
I'm pretty happy with how it turned out, and I'm super glad that it adds a "wow" factor to the suite, but also that it's actually informative and useful to my guests. I've already been receiving great feedback from them!
Of course, these ideas of mine could've never been materialized without the help of Percy (@percygallese), who was able to solve all techical and production aspects, and manage to make this design effectively turn to a reality. 😁
